The authors propose a construction of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated to product systems of \(C^*\)-correspondences over Ore monoids in terms of direct limits and section algebras of Fell bundles over groups. The motivation for their construction is the observation that a Cuntz-Pimsner covariant representation of an \(A-B\) correspondence \(E\) between two \(C^*\)-algebras \(A\) and \(B\) may be obtained from what they call a correspondence triangle. In the greatest generality, a correspondence triangle involves three \(C^*\)-algebras \(A,B\) and \(C\), three \(C^*\)-correspondences \(E_{AB}, E_{AC}\) and \(E_{BC}\) and an isomorphism of correspondences \(E_{AB}\otimes E_{BC}\mapsto E_{AC}\). To characterise Cuntz-Pimsner covariance one needs the \(A-B\) correspondence \(E\) to be so-called proper, i.e., the left action is a nondegenerate \(*\)-homomorphism into the generalised compacts. The authors go on to consider product systems of proper \(C^*\)-correspondences over Ore monoids, the latter being algebraically well-suited for the direct limit approach, and also for the formation of Fell bundles over groups. Here, a right Ore monoid is a left-reversible cancellative monoid with an additional order-related property. A right Ore monoid \(P\) admits an enveloping group \(G=PP^{-1}\). The authors also propose a groupoid model for their construction, and study its properties in depth. An extensive comparative discussion with earlier constructions of \(C^*\)-algebras with groupoid presentation of similar flavour is presented. Simplicity criteria are obtained and also the \(K\)-theory of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra is computed, by reducing to the case of computing the \(K\)-theory of certain group crossed products. | |||
