The author studies entire solutions of a certain nonlinear PDE that is closely connected to a problem introduced by \textit{S. K. Donaldson} [in: O. García-Prada (ed.) et al., The many facets of geometry. A tribute to Nigel Hitchin. Oxford University Press, 71--91 (2010; Zbl 1211.58015)]. The equation is \(u_{tt}\Delta u - |\nabla u_t|^2=1\), \(u(t,x)\) being a scalar valued function defined on \(\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^n\). It is proved that, if \(u_{tt}>0\) and \(u_{tt}(t,x)\,dt^2\) is a complete Riemannian metric on \(\mathbb{R}\) for each \(x\), then \(u_{tt}\) is already a positive constant. In such a case, author shows how to find all entire solutions of the equation and postulates the conjecture that no other entire solutions exist. For \(n=2\), the equation studied here is a special type of the complex Monge-Ampère equation, closely connected to the study of the existence of Einstein-Kähler metrics on Kähler manifolds.
