In this paper the author presents the theory of Ringel-Hall algebras in the special case of a cyclic quiver with special emphasis on the Hopf algebra structure. Among other statements, the author outlines the proof of the fact that the center of the Ringel-Hall algebra is isomorphic to the ring of symmetric functions (after extending scalars). The paper is in some sense complementary to and filling some gaps in the survey by \textit{O. Schiffmann}, [Fields Inst. Commun. 40, 453-479 (2004; Zbl 1134.16301)], but it also confirms a conjecture formulated in the latter paper.
