Let \(k\) be a field of characteristic different from 2 and \(E\) an étale algebra, i.e., a product of separable field extensions of finite degree of \(k\). Let \( (E,\sigma )\) be a \(\mathbb Q\)-étale algebra with involution of type CM of rank \( 2n\), and let \(q:V\times V\rightarrow \mathbb Q\) be a quadratic space over \(\mathbb Q\) with \( \mathrm{dim}(q)=\mathrm{rank}(E)\). The main result of this article is that the orthogonal group \(O(q)\) contains a maximal torus of type \( (E,\sigma )\) if and only if \(\mathrm{disc}(q)=\mathrm{disc}(E)\in k^{\ast }/k^{\ast 2}\), the hyperbolicity condition holds, and the signature of \(q\) is even.
