The authors develop a new approach to dilation theory for covariant representations of non-selfadjoint dynamical systems. Their main concern is the relationship between various dilation and commutant lifting properties for such systems and the structure of the associated semicrossed products. For this purpose, they refine many classical notions, including those related to extremal extensions or Dirichlet algebras. These techniques apply, in particular, to graph algebras and tensor algebras associated to \(C^*\)-correspondences. One obtains, among many other results, that semicrossed products of an operator algebra embed completely isometrically into semicrossed products of its \(C^*\)-envelope.
