The authors consider a compact connected oriented bordered Riemann surface \(S\) together with a finite set of marked points \(M\) on the boundary of \(S\) with at least one marked point on each boundary component. A cluster algebra \(A(S,M)\) can be associated to \((S,M)\) as in [\textit{S. Fomin, M. Shapiro} and \textit{D. Thurston} [Acta Math. 201, No. 1, 83-146 (2008; Zbl 1263.13023)]. Following \textit{C. Amiot} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 59, No. 6, 2525-2590 (2009; Zbl 1239.16011)], a cluster category \(C(S,M)\) can be associated to \(A(S,M)\), using the quiver with potential \((Q,W)\) associated to a triangulation of \((S,M)\) via \textit{D. Labardini-Fragoso} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 98, No. 3, 797-839 (2009; Zbl 1241.16012)] and \textit{I. Assem, T. Brüstle, G. Charbonneau-Jodoin} and \textit{P.-G. Plamondon} [Algebra Number Theory 4, No. 2, 201-229 (2010; Zbl 1242.16011)]. By \textit{B. Keller} and \textit{D. Yang} [Adv. Math. 226, No. 3, 2118-2168 (2011; Zbl 1272.13021)], \textit{S. Fomin, M. Shapiro} and \textit{D. Thurston} [loc. cit.] and \textit{D. Labardini-Fragoso} [loc. cit.], this category does not depend, up to triangle equivalence, on the choice of triangulation, so can be regarded as the cluster category \(C(S,M)\) of \((S,M)\). The authors use the classification theory of modules over string algebras, [\textit{M. C. R. Butler} and \textit{C. M. Ringel}, Commun. Algebra 15, 145-179 (1987; Zbl 0612.16013)], to show how indecomposable objects in \(C(S,M)\) can be described in terms of curves in \((S,M)\) (possibly with self-intersections). They go on to describe Auslander-Reiten triangles in \(C(S,M)\) and to show that curves without self-intersections correspond to the indecomposable objects without self-extensions in \(C(S,M)\). They further show that there is a bijection between triangulations of \((S,M)\) and cluster-tilting objects of \(C(S,M)\).
