Bosonization represents a powerful method for solving a variety of models in two-space-time dimensions with relevant applications in both condensed matter physics and string theory. The main goal of the present paper is to extend the framework of bosonization to the case when defects (impurities) are present in space. The new configurations that are introduced and developed here concern chiral fields and vertex operators with defects. As an application of the framework, the massless Thirring model with defect is solved.
