Let \(X\) be a compact connected Riemann surface, fix a point \(x_0\in X\). Let \(M\) (resp. \(M_0\)) be the moduli space of logarithmic connections \((E,D)\) where \(E\) is a vector bundle on \(X\) of rank \(r>1\) and degree \(d, \, (r,d)=1\) (resp. with an isomorphism \(\Lambda^r E \cong {\mathcal O}_X(d x_0)\)) and \(D\) is a connection on \(E\) singular exactly at \(x_0\) with residue \(-\frac{d}{r}\) (resp. such that the induced connection on the determinant of \(E\) is compatible with the de Rham differential on \({\mathcal O}_X(d x_0)\)). Then \(M\) and \(M_0\) are nonsingular quasi-projective varieties over \({\mathbb C}\) of dimensions \(2(r^2(g-1)+1)\) and \(2(r^2-1)(g-1)\) respectively. Theorem. The isomorphism class of \(X\) is uniquely determined by the isomorphism class of \(M\) (respectively \(M_0\)). The theorem is not true for \(r=1\). The moduli space \(M\) (resp. \(M_0\)) is canonically biholomorphic to a space of representations of the fundamental group of \(X\) in GL\((n)\) (resp. SL\((n)\)) and hence the biholomorphism class of the moduli space is independent of the complex structure of \(X\). The theorem shows that the same does not hold for the isomorphism class.
