The authors give an explicit classification of homogeneous quaternionic Kähler structures by real tensors and they relate this to an earlier description by A. Fino based on representation theory. Among other results, the authers prove the following theorem: A connected, simply connected, complete quaternionic Kähler manifold of dimension \(4n \geq 8\) admits a non-vanishing homogeneous Kähler structure in the class \(\mathcal{QK}_{1+2+3}\) if and only if it is the quaternionic hyperbolic space. In this case the homogeneous structure is necessarily of type \(\mathcal{QK}_{3}\).
