It is proved that the group \(\text{Ham} (M,\omega)\) of Hamiltonian automorphisms of the symplectic 4-manifold \((M,\omega)\) contains only finitely many conjugacy classes of maximal compact tori with respect to the action of the full symplectomorphism group \(\text{Symp} (M,\omega)\). The set of conjugacy classes of 2-tori in \(\text{Ham} (M,\omega)\) with respect to Hamiltonian conjugation is also studied and it is proved that its finiteness is equivalent to the finiteness of the symplectic mapping class group \(\pi_0 (\text{Symp} (M,\omega))\). A result of \textit{J. Kedra} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc., 133, No.~1, 305--312 (2005; Zbl 1053.55011)] is extended to rational and ruled manifolds. The results are based on the fact that in a symplectic 4-manifold endowed with any tamed almost complex structure \(J\), exceptional classes of minimal symplectic area are \(J\)-indecomposable.
