This paper studies dynamical systems with holes derived from piecewise expanding maps of the interval. \textit{C. Liverani} and \textit{V. Maume-Deschamps} [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Probab. Stat. 39, No. 3, 385--412 (2003; Zbl 1021.37002)] showed that if a mixing interval map is perturbed by creating a sufficiently small hole then the new map has an absolutely continuous conditionally invariant measure (a.c.c.i.m.). In the paper reviewed here, the authors find an upper bound on the size of a hole for an a.c.c.i.m. to exist where the escape rate does not exceed some value. To do this, the authors use Ulam's method and an abstract perturbation result of \textit{G. Keller} and \textit{C. Liverani} [``Stability of the spectrum for transfer operators'', Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa, Cl. Sci., IV. Ser. 28, No. 1, 141--152 (1999; Zbl 0956.37003)]. Examples are provided.
