Consider two \((n+2)\)-spheres \(S_1^{n+2}\), \(S_2^{n+2}\) embedded in \(S^{n+4}\) and meeting transversely in an \(n\)-sphere \(S^n\). Then we have four knots: \(K_i=(S_i^{n+2},S^{n})\) for \(i=1,2\), and \(X_i=(S^{n+4},S_i^{n+2})\) for \(i=1,2\). The author shows that a pair of \(n\)-knots \((K_1,K_2)\) arises in this way if and only if either \(n\) is even, or the arf invariants are equal if \(n\equiv 1\pmod 4\), or the signatures are equal if \(n\equiv 3\pmod 4\). He goes on to show that a 4-tuple of \((n,n+2)\)-knots \((K_1,K_2,X_1,X_2)\) arises in this way if \(K_1\) and \(K_2\) are slice; in particular, therefore, where \(n\) is even.
