The paper deals with conformal algebras and modules. A cohomology theory of these algebras with coefficients in an arbitrary module has been developed. In Section 2 the authors construct the basis and reduced complexes for a module \(M\) over a conformal algebra \(A\). These complexes define the basis and reduced cohomology of a conformal algebra \(A\). The properties of this cohomology are explored in Sections 3-6. In Section 7 the authors compute the cohomology with trivial coefficients of the Virasoro conformal algebra Vir. In Section 8 they compute the cohomology of a current conformal algebra \(\operatorname {Cur}{\mathfrak g}\) with trivial coefficients for a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\) and the cohomology with coefficients in the current module. The results allow to classify abelian extensions of current algebras. In Section 9 associative conformal algebras and conformal bimodules over them are considered. The analogues of Hochschild and cyclic cohomology as well as Leibniz cohomology are defined. Other developments of the theory and its relations to cohomology of Cartan's filtered Lie algebras and to Lie algebras in a general pseudo-tensor category are considered in Sections 10-12. A list of open questions is presented in Section 13.
