Hierarchies of integrable nonlinear partial differential equations associated to an affine Kac-Moody algebra are considered. An explicit link is established between the approach by \textit{B. Feigin} and \textit{E. Frenkel} [Lect. Notes Math. 1620, 349-418 (1996) and Invent. Math. 120, No. 2, 379-408 (1995; Zbl 0829.58021)] and the earlier approach by \textit{V. G. Drinfeld} and \textit{V. V. Sokolov} [Sov. Math. Dokl. 23, 457-462 (1981; Zbl 0513.35073) and J. Sov. Math. 30, 1975-2036 (1985; Zbl 0578.58040)]. A new derivation of the KdV hierarchy in the zero-curvature form is obtained and explicit formulas for Hamiltonians are given.
