The authors study the topology of the space \(\text{Hol}^*_k(M_g,P^n)\) of holomorphic maps from complex curves \(M_g\) of genus \(g\geq 1\) to a complex projective space \(P^n\). In particular, these spaces and their homology are completely determined when \(M_g\) is an elliptic curve and essentially determined in the case where \(M_g\) is hyperelliptic. Constructing an embedding \(\text{Hol}^*_k(M_g,P^n)\subset (SP^k(M_g))^{n+1}\) into the \(k\)-fold symmetric product of \(M_g\), the authors study the corresponding compactification \(E^n_k(M_g)\) of \(\text{Hol}^*_k(M_g,P^n)\) in \((SP^k(M_g))^{n+1}\). They prove that this \(E^n_k(M_g)\) is given as the total space of a fibering with fiber \((P^{k-g})^{n+1}\) over the Jacobi variety \(J(M_g)\). E.g., according to Poincaré duality \[ \widetilde H^{2k(n+1)-2ng-*}(\text{Hol}^*_k(M_g,P^n);F)\cong H_*(E^n_k(M_g),V^n_k(M_g);F) \] for \(k\geq 2g-1\), where \(V^n_k(M_g)\) denotes the complement \(E^n_k(M_g)\backslash \text{Hol}^*_k(M_g,P^n)\). It is given also a detailed description of the structure of this \(V^n_k(M_g)\).
