In [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 30, No. 1, 76-86 (1994; Zbl 0857.55003)], \textit{B. H. Gross} and \textit{M. J. Hopkins} presented a relationship between the Brown-Comenetz duality and the Spanier-Whitehead duality in the \(K(n)\)-local stable homotopy category. The result in question is a kind of an analogue of Serre duality in the subcategory of \(K(n)\)-local spectra. The purpose of the present paper is to indicate the context of the Gross-Hopkins theorem and to give a new proof of this result. The author's formulation of the Gross-Hopkins duality is compared with various other possible alternatives considered by other authors (see Remark 21).
