The author studies first the maximum principle for smooth null hypersurfaces and then the maximum principle for \(C^0\) null hypersurfaces with application to the study of some rigidity properties of space-times which contain null lines. He shows how the maximum principle for rough null hypersurfaces can be used to obtain a general ``splitting theorem'' for space-times with null lines.
