This paper deals with \(C^*\)-algebras of universal inverse semigroups attached to left cancellative semigroups. The left inverse hull is a quotient of this universal inverse semigroup. The author argues that this universal object leads to a \(C^*\)-algebra with better properties (for instance, concerning functoriality) as compared to existing constructions. It remains, however, to describe the \(C^*\)-algebra of this universal object in concrete examples.
