The authors develop a notion of K-stability for Sasakian manifolds. When the Sasakian manifold is quasi-regular then this is equivalent to the work of \textit{J. Ross} and \textit{R. Thomas} [J. Differ. Geom. 88, No. 1, 109--159 (2011; Zbl 1244.32013)] on K-stability for orbifolds. The authors introduce a suitable extension of K-stability to the irregular case which is called K-semistability. They show that if \((S,g)\) is a Sasakian manifold with Reeb vector field \(\xi\) and \(g\) has constant scalar curvature, then the cone \((C(S),\xi)\) is K-semistable. As an application the authors recover the results of \textit{D. Martelli} et al. [Commun. Math. Phys. 280, No. 3, 611--673 (2008; Zbl 1161.53029)] algebraically by showing that in the situation they considered, volume minimization is equivalent to K-semistability for product test configurations. Moreover, the authors show that the Lichnerowicz obstruction of \textit{J. P. Gauntlett} et al. [Commun. Math. Phys. 273, No. 3, 803--827 (2007; Zbl 1149.53026)] arise from K-semistability considerations for the Rees algebra.
