Let \(M_g\) be the moduli space of smooth curves of genus \(g\geq 2\). It was known that there is a so called universal moduli space \(\mathcal U(d,r)\to M_g\) such that the fibre over \([C]\in M_g\) is \(\mathcal U_C(r,d)/\text{Aut}(C)\), where \(\mathcal U_C(r,d)\) is the moduli spaces of semistable bundles of rank \(r\) and degree \(d\) on \(C\). The paper under review proves that there is a compactification \(\widetilde{\mathcal U(r,d)}\to\widetilde{M_g}\) of \(\mathcal U(d,r)\to M_g\), where \(\widetilde {M_g}\) is the moduli spaces of stable curves, such that the fibre, at an automorphism free curve \([C]\in \widetilde{M_g}\), is the moduli space of semistable pairs \((V,C_k)\), where \(C_k\) is a semistable model of \(C\).
