    This paper studies distortion asymptotics for iterations of diffeomorphisms which are selfmaps of the unit interval. Let \(f:[0,1] \rightarrow [0,1]\) be a \(C^N\)-diffeomorphism, \(1 \leq N \leq \infty\), such that 0 and 1 are fixed points of \(f\). The growth sequence of \(f\) is defined by \[ \Gamma_n(f) = \max \bigg( \max_ {x \in [0,1]} | (f^n)'(x)| , \max_{x \in [0,1]} | (f^{-n})'(x)| \bigg) \] for \(n \geq 1\). The limiting behavior of \(\Gamma_n(f)\) is an invariant. The authors obtain several results on the asymptotic behavior of the growth sequence and extend some results of \textit{L. Polterovich} and \textit{M. Sodin} [J. Anal. Math. 92, 191--209 (2004; Zbl 1056.37027)]. Examples are given to show the sharpness of the results. See also Section 2.6 of [\textit{Y. I. Lyubich}, Mathematical structures in population genetics, Biomathematics, 22, Berlin etc.: Springer-Verlag (1992; Zbl 0747.92019)] and section 7.10.C of \textit{G. D'Ambra} and \textit{M. Gromov}, [J. Differ. Geom., Suppl. 1, 19--111 (1991; Zbl 0797.53057)].
