This is a short historical survey on the development of nonholonomic dynamics, and especially the dynamics of rigid body in contact with a solid surface and its integrable cases. The emphasis is laid on the influence and contributions to the subject of papers by S. A. Chaplygin, G. K. Suslov and V. V. Kozlov which were published only in Russian. This paper introduces the series of publications of translations of some of these papers and new papers on this subject in this journal.
