The following equivariant version of a result by \textit{F. C. Kirwan} [Cohomology of Quotients in Symplectic and Algebraic Geometry, Math. Notes 31, Princeton Univ. Press, Princeton (1984; Zbl 0553.14020)] is proved: Let \(M\) be a compact symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian action of a torus \(G\), let \(T\) be a subtorus of \(G\), and let \(\Phi\) be the corresponding moment map for the induced \(T\)-action. For a regular value \(\mu\in{\mathfrak t}^*\) of \(\Phi\), the inclusion of the submanifold \(M_\mu=\Phi^{-1}(\mu)\) of \(M\) induces a surjection \[ \kappa:H^*_G(M)\rightarrow H^*_{G/T}(M_\mu/T) \] in equivariant cohomology. The authors prove also a result describing the kernel of \(\kappa\) that turns out to be generated by a small number of classes \(\alpha\in H^*_G(M)\) satisfying very explicit restriction properties. These two theorems allow one to compute the cohomology of the symplectic reduction by a torus action.
