The central definition in this article is inspired from work of \textit{C. De Concini} and \textit{C. Procesi} who gave a presentation for the cohomology algebra of subspace arrangement compactifications constructed from a building set in the intersection lattice of the subspaces [Sel. Math. 1, 495--535 (1995; Zbl 0848.18004)]. Starting from any given finite atomic lattice and any so-called building set in the lattice, the authors define a certain graded algebra over the integers by generators and relations. They prove that this algebra occurs as the Chow ring of a smooth toric variety. More precisely, they construct an appropriate smooth toric variety from the given atomic lattice and the building set by describing its fan and also geometrically by a series of blowups and orbit removals starting from affine space. Moreover, they produce a Gröbner basis of the relation ideal of the algebra and a monomial basis for the algebra.
