    A Nijenhuis algebra is an algebra \(A\) over a field \(K\) equipped with a linear operator \(N\) satisfying the relation \(N(x)N(y)+N^2(xy)=N(N(x)y+xN(y))\), \(x,y\in A\). This condition may be interpreted as the homogeneous version of the Rota-Baxter relation of weight \(\lambda\in K\), i.e. \(R(x)R(y)+\lambda R(xy)=R(R(x)y+xR(y))\). In the paper under review the author gives a construction of the free commutative unital Nijenhuis algebra, based on augmented modified quasi-shuffled products. It is known that Rota-Baxter algebras always give Loday-type algebras, i.e. dendriform di- and trialgebra structures. In the present paper the author gives also some connections between Nijenhuis algebras and Loday-type algebras.
