The authors define and study basic differential geometric structures on a transitive Lie algebroid \(A\) and propose a formulation of gauge theory in terms of generalized connection and metrics on \(A\). First of all, they develop a theory of differential forms and establish a correspondence between a description of the complex of differential forms in terms of global objects and the local description, associated with a local trivialization. The notion of connection, metric, Hodge star operator and integration of forms on \(A\) with values in the vector bundle \(L\), which is the kernel of the anchor map, are considered. The developed formalism is applied for construction of a general gauge theory defined by a Yang-Mills-Higgs type functional on \(A\). The general theory is applied and specified for two special types of algebroids : Atiyah algebroid associated with a principal bundle and Lie algebroid of derivations of a vector bundle.
