In the paper under review, the authors deal with non-symmetric perturbations of a self-adjoint operator with compact resolvent in a separable Hilbert space. Their main result states that, under some conditions on the perturbation, the root system of the perturbed operator contains a Riesz basis. The spectrum of the unperturbed operator is assumed to consist of positive and eventually simple eigenvalues \(\mu_k\) satisfying the gap condition \(\mu_{k+1} - \mu_k \ge C k^{\gamma-1}\) for some positive \(C\) and \(\gamma\) and all sufficiently large \(k\). Applications to finite band matrices and one-dimensional Schrödinger operators are also given.
