Let \(X\) be a polarized irreducible smooth projective algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p\ge 0\). The authors of the present article address the question of when does a Higgs bundle on \(X\), equipped with a structure of a system of Hodge bundles, is semistable and when it is stable. A number of useful criteria and relevant examples is exhibited. Moreover, given a vector bundle on a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic equipped with a connection \(\nabla\) and a \(\nabla\)-Griffiths transversal filtration, a criterion of semistability of an associated Higgs bundle with respect to this data is provided.
