The author works with a large class of finitely ramified fractals, generated by a finite number of contractive similarities, and focuses on the existence of a distance on these objects, satisfying certain additional properties. Two set-ups are identified and thoroughly studied: (i) the contractive similarities are Lipschitz of prescribed constants less than one with respect to the distance therein; (ii) arbitrary compositions of the contractive similarities are uniformly bi-Lipschitz of related constants. The main findings consist in: (1) proving that the above two set-ups are essentially equivalent; (2): obtaining a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such a distance, in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the product of certain matrices associated to the fractal.
