The authors introduce some new analogues of the Markov spectrum defined in terms of modular billiards and consider the problem of characterizing that part of the spectrum below the lowest limit point. The connection between modular billiards and real indefinite binary quadratic forms is recalled and a formula for the hyperbolic distance between a billiard and a point is given. The formula is written in terms of the minimum of an indefinite quadratic form. Connections between hyperbolic geodesics and continued fractions are investigated.
