Linear partial differential operators of the form \[ L= \sum_{i_1+\cdots+ i_n\leq d} a_{i_1\cdots i_n} D^{i_1}_1\cdots D^{i_n}_n \] are considered with regard to their factorability. The factorable operators lead to practical methods for solving linear equations of the form \(L(f)=0\). Only operators constructed with \(D_x\) and \(D_y\) are dealt with, of orders 2, 3 and 4. The results are obtained by careful examination; in the case of fourth-order operators, a list of possible types of factorable operators is indicated. The reduction to ordinary differential equation operators is also considered.
