This paper is concerned with the classification of holonomy groups of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds \((M,g)\). The main result is: Given a \(g\)-symmetric operator \(L : TM \to TM\), it is possible to construct a pseudo-Riemannian metric \(R\) which realizes the identity component of the centralizer of \(L\) in the orthogonal group \(O(g)\) as the holonomy group of the Levi-Civita connection associated with \(R\). Classical methods, such as the Ambrose-Singer theorem and the ``Berger test'' are used to prove the result. The metric \(R\) is constructed naturally from data associated with the operator \(L\), namely its minimal polynomial.
