    Let \((A,L)\) be a polarized abelian variety of dimension \(g\) and type \((d_1,\dots,d_g)\). The author shows that \(L\) is not normally generated in the following cases: 1) some \(d_i=2\) and \(d_j\leq 4\) for \(1\leq j\leq g\); 2) some \(d_i=2\) and \(h^0(L)=2^{g+1}\); 3) \(g=3\) and \((d_1,d_2,d_3)\in \{ (1,2,8), (2,2,4), (2,4,4)\}\); 4) \(g=4\) and \((d_1,d_2,d_3,d_4)\in \{ (1,1,2,16), (1,2,2,8), (1,2,4,4),\) \((2,2,2,4), (2,2,4,4), (2,4,4,4)\}\). The author also shows that \(L\) is normally generated if \((A,L)\) is generic and either 1) \(g=3\), \(h^0(L)\geq 15\) and \((d_1,d_2,d_3)\notin \{(1,2,8), (1,3,6), (2,2,4),\) \((2,4,4)\}\); or 2) \(g=4\), \(h^0(L)\geq 31\) and \((d_1,d_2,d_3,d_4)\notin \{ (1,1,2,16), (1,2,2,8), (1,2,4,4),\) \((1,3,3,6), (2,2,2,4), (2,2,4,4), (2,4,4,4)\}\). The cases of type \((1,3,6)\) and \((1,3,3,6)\) are still open. The methods rely on work of \textit{J. N. Iyer} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 355 No. 8, 3209--3216 (2003; Zbl 1016.14024)], the theory of canonical theta functions and some computer calculations.
