Aus einer unbekannten Population \(U\) werden \(n\) Proben \(x_i\) \((i=1,\, 2, \ldots \!, n)\) entnommen und der Größe nach geordnet. Alle \(x_i\) mögen verschieden sein. Verf. sucht die Wahrscheinlichkeit dafür zu bestimmen, daß der unbekannte Median von \(U\) zwischen \(x_k\) und \(x_{n-k+1}\) liegt. Merkwürdig an dieser Art, einen Schwankungsbereich zu definieren, ist der Umstand, daß die zufälligen Werte \(x_k\) und \(x_{n-k+1}\) einer einzigen Versuchsreihe als Grenzen gewählt werden. Der Ansatz ist für eine unendliche und eine endliche Population durchgeführt (Urnenschema ohne Zurücklegen!). Das Formelsystem für den zweiten Fall ist theoretisch beachtlich, für den praktischen Gebrauch aber wohl zu umständlich.
