It is known that if \(f: R^{2n}\to R^ n\) is a smooth function, then for each \(0\leq s<r\) and \(g\in C\) the initial value problem \(x'(t)=f(x(t),x(t-s))\) for \(t>0\), \(x(t)=g(t)\) for \(-r\leq t\leq 0\), has a unique solution \(x(s,g)\) which is defined on an interval \([-r,a]\) for some \(a>0\) and is continuous in \((s,g)\). This solution is smooth in \(g\) but in this context the same is not true with respect to \(s\). If we choose \(W^{1,\infty}\) with the norm \(\| g\|^ 1=| g(- r)|+\int^ 0_{-r}| g(s)| ds\) as our basic space, then \(x(s,g)\) will be smooth in \(s\). This result is stated precisely and proved in this paper.
