A noncommutative Jordan Banach (ncJB for short) algebra is said to be modular an0nihilator if it is nondegenerate and \(A/\hbox{socle}(A)\) is radical. The paper under review is devoted to prove the following result: ``For a semisimple ncJB algebra the following conditions are equivalent: i) \(A\) is non-essential, ii) \(A\) is modular annihilator and iii) \(A\) contains a non-essential ideal such that \(A/I\) is radical.'' This extends (and provides a simple proof of) a result on semisimple complex associative Banach algebra due to \textit{B. A. Barnes} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 133, 511--517 (1968; Zbl 0159.18501)]. The proof of the above result is based on the following important remark: for any element \(x\) in an ncJB algebra \(A\), there is a commutative and strongly associative subalgebra \(C(x)\) such that the spectrum of \(x\) in \(A\) coincides with the spectrum of \(x\) in \(C(x)\).
