Using classical techniques (phase plane analysis) the equation \(\dot z=p_ 0z+p_ 1| z|^ 2z-\overline z^ 3\), \(z\in\mathbb{C}\) is investigated. This equation appears in the study of Hopf bifurcations with periodic forcing. The application of normal form theory and truncation leads to an equation as given above. First of all, the equation is rewritten in polar coordinates, then a rescaling leads to a system \(\dot r=\alpha r_ 0+(\alpha_ 1+\cos\varphi)r^ 2\), \(\dot\varphi=2(\omega+(\beta-\sin\varphi)r)\). The cases (i) \(\omega\beta>0\), \(|\beta|>1\), (ii) \(|\beta|<1\), (iii) \(|\beta|>1\), \(\omega\beta<0\) can now be treated separately. A complete description of the flow is possible.
