A system of integro-differential equations for scattering and transmission functions for a homogeneous finite, non emitting atmosphere is derived in the paper. The principle of invariance for the time- dependent transfer of radiation is then exploited in order to formulate the functional equations for the scattering and transmission function. Connections with the previous literature in the field are well remarked in the introduction.
