The paper under review announces interesting results concerning the classification of smooth projective complex curves of genera 7, 8 and 9 and their canonical rings by means of the symmetric spaces \(X^{24- 2g}_{2g-2}\subset P^{22-g}\) studied by the author in an earlier paper [see Algebraic Geometry and commutative Algebra, in Honor of M. Nagata, Vol. I, 357-377 (1988; Zbl 0701.14044)]. Here is a sample of the results obtained: Theorem. A curve \(C\) of genus 8 is the transversal linear section of the 8-dimensional Grassmannian if and only if \(C\) has no \(g^ 2_ 7\).
