The logarithmic Sobolev inequalities have been introduced by \textit{L. Gross} [Am. J. Math. 97, 1061-1083 (1975; Zbl 0318.46049)] as a generalization of the classical Sobolev inequalities to infinite dimensional spaces. In the present paper the author formulates a criterion, similar to the Dobrushin uniqueness condition, on a local specification on a countable product space of copies of a Riemannian manifold or a discrete space with two elements, assuring that the corresponding set of Gibbs measures consists of a unique measure satisfying a logarithmic Sobolev inequality. Furthermore the paper contains applications of this result in statistical mechanics, quantum field theory and stochastic dynamics.
