\(K\)-moduli, moduli of smoothness, and Bernstein polynomials on a simplex (Q1192448): Difference between revisions

Let \(f\in C[0,1]\) and let \(B_ n(f,x)\) be the classical Bernstein polynomials associated to \(f\). The approximation behavior of \(B_ n(f,x)\) is related to the weighted \(K\)-modulus \(K_ \varphi^ 2(f,t)\), for example by \(\| B_ n f-f\|_ \infty \leq C\cdot K_ \varphi^ 2\bigl(f,{1\over{n+1}}\bigr)\). (See, for example, \textit{H. Berens} and \textit{G. G. Lorentz} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 21, 693-708 (1972; Zbl 0262.41006)].) The authors develop a new \(K\)-modulus for functions \(f\in L^ p(S)\), where \(S\) is a \(d\)-dimensional simplex. They show that their \(K\)-modulus is equivalent to a modulus of smoothness [cf. \textit{Z. Ditzian} and \textit{V. Totik}, Moduli of smoothness, Springer Series in Computational Mathematics 9 (1987; Zbl 0262.41006)]. Moreover, they use this \(K\)-modulus to characterize the approximation behavior of the Bernstein polynomials for functions in \(C(S)\).
