The authors generalize the notion of an \(\alpha\)-set in ordinary topology [\textit{O. Njåstad}, Pac. J. Math. 15, 961-970 (1965; Zbl 0137.419)] to fuzzy topology and introduce fuzzy \(\alpha\)-continuous mappings. They deduce relations between these and fuzzy continuous, pre-continuous and semi-continuous mappings. The non-coincidence of these classes is established. Fuzzy \(\alpha\)-open maps are also studied.
