The paper contains sufficient conditions ensuring that a symmetric operator associated with a classical Dirichlet form is essential self- adjoint (on an appropriate subspace). The main condition differs from the usual ones because it implies a one-sided restriction on the derivatives for a suitable approximation of the drift coefficient \(\beta\) instead of \(L^ p\) or smoothness conditions on \(\beta\). By an addendum to find in Potential Analysis 2, No. 2 (1993; review below), the proof of the main result is corrected in so far as it is shown there that Lemma 1 is not needed (its statement holds only under more restrictive conditions).
