Cet article présente une histoire, marquée par trois moments principaux, du théorème fondamental de l'algèbre -- les premières formulations du théorème, sans démonstration, au début du \(\text{XVII}^ e\) siècle (Girard notamment); -- les premières tentatives de démonstration au milieu du \(\text{XVIII}^ e\) siècle (d'Alembert, Euler); -- la première démonstration rigoureuse (Gauss). L'auteur dissocie deux résultats: le théorème fondamental de l'algèbre, appelé encore théorème de d'Alembert (TFA), et le théorème de factorisation linéaire, nommé parfois théorème de Kronecker (TFL). Cette distinction mathématique qui apparaît entre TFA et TFL permet de reprendre l'analyse historique dans cet article.
