The authors give explicit formulas for the coefficients in the equality \(A^ m=c_ 0E+c_ 1A+\cdots+c_{n-1}A^{n-1}\) where \(A\) is an \(n\times n\) matrix. These formulas express the \(c_ i\)'s as functions of the coefficients of the characteristic equation of \(A\). These formulas (and some related formulas) are applied to calculate a matrix function \(f(A)\).
