The asymptotic behavior of solutions to the equation \(\{A(u')u'\}'+\delta(r) A(u')u'+ f(r,u)=0\) is considered, where \(A\), \(\delta\) and \(f\) are increasing functions of algebraic type. The problem is considered as the variational problem (1) \(\delta\int_ J g(r)\{G(u')-F(r,u)\}dr=0\), where \(J=[R,\infty)\), \(R>0\), \(g\in C^ 1(y)\), \(g(r)>0\) for all \(r\in J\), \(G\in C^ 1(R)\), \(G(p)>0\) for all \(p\neq 0\), \(G(0)=0\) and \(G\) is strictly convex and \(F\in G_ 1(J\times R)\), \(F(r,0)=0\) for all \(r\in J\). Using lemmas established by Pucci and Serrin, asymptotic stability conditions are derived and sufficient conditions for oscillatory extremals of (1) are given. Some results concerning monotonicity of extremals of class \(C^ 2\) are also established.
