    The authors deal with the problem of determining approximate solutions for the operator equation (1) \(Aw=g\), where \(A\) is a bounded non-negative selfadjoint operator on a Hilbert space and \(g\in R(A)\), the range of \(A\). This problem is in general ill-posed in the sense that even if a unique solution for (1) exists, the solution may not depend continuously on the `data' \(g\) (this situation occurs if \(R(A)\) is not closed). Thus if \(R(A)\) is not closed it is required to regularize (1) so as to obtain a family \(\{w_ \alpha\}_{\alpha>0}\) such that \(w_ \alpha\) is a solution of a well-posed equation, and \(w_ \alpha\to w\) as \(\alpha\to 0\). The authors develop an a posteriori parameter choice strategy for the simplified regularization of ill-posed problems where no information about the smoothness of the unknown solution is required. If the smoothness of the solution is known then, as a particular case, the optimal rate is achieved.
