The author proves the following Theorem: Let \(G\) be a collineation group of a projective plane containing but not normalizing a cyclic Singer group. Then \(G\) is doubly transitive. The Ostrom-Wagner Theorem then gives a shorter proof of the previously known result of U. Ott that if a projective plane admits essentially two Singer groups, then the plane is Desarguesian. Among other arguments, the author makes use of the classification of finite non-solvable doubly transitive groups which contain a cyclic regular subgroup.
