Explicit solutions for some gyroscopic linear dynamical systems are obtained by selecting a change of the dependent vector variable, which eliminates the velocity term in the transformed equation of motion. The transformation corresponds to the vector counterpart of the technique used for the reduction of order in ordinary scalar differential equations. The matrix coefficients of the equations considered obey a certain commutativity condition, which can be expressed in terms of the vanishing of their Lie product or commutator.
