A real symmetric matrix is a special elliptic matrix if it has only one positive eigenvalue and all its diagonal entries are zero. The author investigates the relation between the set of all nonnegative special elliptic \(n \times n\) matrices and so-called Menger matrices which go back to \textit{K. Menger} [Math. Ann. 100, 75-163 (1928; JFM 54.0622.02)]. Also considered are the matrices \(A\) such that \(-A^{-1}\) is a special elliptic matrix.
